Manchester city planners have given the go ahead to the UK’s first airport city. The £650 million project will deliver a high quality commercial community that is expected to create over 11,000 jobs over the next ten years.
The 65 acre development follows similar projects in Amsterdam, Frankfurt and Copenhagen and will enhance Manchester’s ambition to become a major European and global business centre.
Airport City will be built around a 13 acre central park and will provide five million sq ft of offices, industrial property, shops, hotels, restaurants and coffee bars. It is hoped that the site will prove to be a vibrant go-to destination for both business and leisure.
A breakdown of Airport City’s planned commercial property provision is as follows;
The development will also include a new link road providing access to the motorway network and an extension of the Metrolink. Furthermore, with daily flights to over 200 global destinations Airport City will also provide superb international links.
Airport City director, John Atkins, welcomed the development being given the green light saying it is a ‘major milestone’ that will enable Manchester Airports Group (MAG) to progress to the delivery stage. Now that approval has been granted, it is believed that construction could begin within weeks.
Businesses relocating to Airport City will not only benefit from first class facilities, there is also a financial incentive. Because the site falls within one of the government’s new Enterprise Zones they will benefit from a business rates discount worth up to £275,000 over a five year period.
