Many people love a bargain and so turn to the internet when it comes to buying certain products that they have in mind. But when it comes to browsing, the internet just doesn’t seem to scratch that itch that the high street does.
According to a recent study conducted by retail analysts, Kantar almost three quarters of shoppers like to physically touch a product before they buy it – something which is impossible in the online world.
Did you know that £311 billion was spent last year on shopping? But how much was online and how much was in a physical store; 50/50, 70/30 or 90/10? The answer is 90/10, but not in the way that you’re probably thinking. 90 per cent of that billion pound spending was actually spent in shops, whilst only 10 per cent was spent online. So is the high street about to make a comeback?
With this in mind, many online stores have made the move into the retail world and opened a physical store with excellent results. Screwfix was originally a catalogue only trader, but in 2005 they opened their first retail commercial property. Now they have over 300 stores nationwide and their click-and-collect service is proving extremely popular.
But at the end of the day physically walking around shops is a social aspect of life. You may meet up with friends, grab a bite to eat and have a wander around the shops. You may not have anything in mind that you particularly need, but that is the beauty of shopping. Shopping online is completely different, you mainly do it alone and you buy what you have in mind already.
Do you feel that the high street is making a comeback? Do you still enjoy wandering around the shops and browsing items rather than just clicking and buying?
