Recently it was reported that Oxford Street is on course to smash the £5 billion sales barrier by the end of the year. Yesterday there was a further boost for the street when leading figures from the fashion industry endorsed it as one of the greatest shopping destinations in the world.
The endorsement came as seventy five 12 foot flags were unveiled along the length of the street as part of the Oxford Street Fashion Showcase. It is estimated that the flags will be seen by 12 million shoppers over the coming two weeks.
The promotional campaign is the result of a partnership between the New West End Company and the British Fashion Council (BFC) ahead of London Fashion Week which begins on 13th September.
During the campaign there will be a host of events taking place at some of Oxford Street’s flagship stores including Selfridges, House of Fraser, Topshop, M&S and H&M. These include talks with designers, celebrity DJ sessions and giveaways. In addition Fashion Week sponsor Vodafone will be offering customers exclusive VIP access to catwalk shows at Somerset House.
At yesterday’s unveiling designer Matthew Williamson said; “London has a very special kind of style. It’s very different to Milan, Paris and New York.
“It’s nice to have that personality that we haven’t lost. It’s the quirky English style that people like to see when they come to Fashion Week.”
Williamson was joined by model Amber Le Bon, wearing a dress by Roksanda Ilincic, fellow designer Henry Holland, the chief executive of the BFC Caroline Rush and London Mayor Boris Johnson.
Mr Johnson said; “This fabulous celebration along one of the most famous streets in the world shows why London is number one for fashion.
“Not only do we have some of the most creative and influential designers on the planet, the capital offers the most forward-looking shopping opportunities for fashion lovers, generating billions for our economy.”
The New West End Company is a body established by retailers and commercial property owners to promote the district. Speaking on behalf of the group, campaign director Jace Tyrrell said they were proud to be part of the initiative and to be associated with the launch of London Fashion Week.
