The office is a second home for many. We mentioned in a previous piece that the Office for National Statistics said an average office career of 50 years, means 23.3% of your total waking hours is spent at work. Office zen is essential to ensure a peaceful and productive work environment. One of the main factors is clutter. No one likes clutter. Some call it organised chaos, others call it laziness and complacency. You may not notice, but right at this moment you could be engulfed in a sea of office junk. We’re here to help. Think of us as the Kim and Aggie of commercial property. Here are three of Movehut’s top tips to utilise your office space.
1. Unused Equipment Removal
As time progresses, technology and furniture becomes antiquated, which means an upgrade is sorely needed. However, either due to uncertainty regarding the correct way of disposing equipment or simply just forgetting the items exist, piles in various corners of the office fill with unwanted accessories, resulting in a car boot sale vibe rather than a workplace. There are two methods which are both productive. Firstly, if agreed upon by the correct channels, you could sell the old equipment to employees. By doing so, you are both removing the unwanted clutter and getting money which could go back into the company. The other method is a service which caters for recycling old technology, where they will try and restore its use. Be mindful that some equipment is beyond repair so just check what you’re sending off to be recycled.
2. Go Digital
We currently live in the 21st Century…I’ve just checked. The era where everything we think and own is stored in a cloud somewhere. Pen and paper is almost seen as a throwback Thursday moment. Before everyone went digital and our lives required a password, this pen and paper thing was all the rage. In this instance, your office could be full of documents for as far as the eye could see in cabinets and drawers. So how about going digital? This would drastically reduce your paper levels going forward and great for the environment in the process. However, this may not be a viable option for some businesses and you have to be mindful of the unpredictability of technology. No one wants the accounts department to lose all the accounts.
3. Desk Positioning
Everyone knows what to expect in an office. Desks, chairs, printers and humans. All of which take up space in some capacity. If you are either looking for an office to rent or currently have residence in one, it’s important to see how your desks are positioned and getting that right balance between claustrophobia and wasting space. There is such a thing as too much space. For instance, if you have a two floor unit, both being occupied by small teams, you may want to take a look if your space is being used correctly. With careful planning, you may be able to utilise one floor, leaving the other floor available as a recreational and meeting area. Or, if you know that you’re not planning on expanding your workforce, you could sub-let the extra space out as a serviced office to a nearby firm, which in turn would create extra revenue.
Now you know what’s needed for an ideal office, why not take our quick office comfort quiz to see if your desk is doing your health justice.
