What do you wear to work when you go to your commercial property or serviced office? Do you believe that what you dress in to work has a consequence on your productivity, your outlook and further aspects of your work life?
Depending on your occupation, you may be wearing something like a shirt and tie. On the other hand, you may be required to wear a particular uniform, if you work in a specific sector. For example, if you are a mechanic in a garage, turning up in a suit would not be thought of as appropriate.
There have been quite a few research initiatives over the years that have endeavoured to discover the effects that different work clothing can have on employees and also how companies can try to get improved effectiveness out of their workforce.
A few decades ago, there was a study in the United States of America, which came to the conclusion that people who come to work in comfortable and casual work clothes, give employers an improved amount of work. The survey said workers will also take more pleasure in coming into the office.
This originally started out as a one day a week situation, but once the trial had ended, the companies speedily realised that it was essential to make a permanent change to their structure, regarding work clothes.
Casual dress was adopted in many serviced offices and when the next quarterly results came in the statistics didn’t lie, productivity had increased and morale had improved.
Simply by allowing their staff to come in to work in their own clothes they were giving their staff the opportunity to show their personality and blossom as individuals, as opposed to being a number in a serviced office.
It also started more conversations up around the office, helping to breed more interworking between the employees. This trend has now moved across the Atlantic Ocean and into many European serviced offices.
Obviously there are some jobs that require staff to wear uniforms, if you are a nurse it wouldn’t be good to turn up for work in a pair of jeans and t-shirt. Sometimes you just have to accept that your chosen profession won’t be able to adopt the casual style.
However, if you are working in an office, maybe 2011 would be a good time to approach your boss about the dress code in and around your serviced office.
