Amazon, the online retailer has announced plans to open an office in London to base its Digital Media Development Centre in.
The teams who will be moving into the office are responsible for the design and development of the Amazon website, as well as LOVEFILM and Pushbutton (both owned by Amazon) and they are hoping to take advantage of London’s thriving digital media industry over the coming months.
Speaking of the office move, Paula Byrne, Managing Director of the new office in London said: “London is a hotbed of tech talent and testament to that fact is Amazon choosing the capital as the location for the new global Digital Media Development Centre.
“Innovation is part of the Amazon DNA and we are creating a British centre of excellence to design and develop the next generation of TV and film services for a wide range of digital devices.”
The 47,000 sq. ft. Digital Media Development Centre in London will be based in the technology cluster, also known as ‘Silicon Roundabout’. Teams of software developers, graphic designers and user-interface gurus will be based in the capital to create interactive digital media for TVs, PC’s, game consoles and smartphones.
The move by Amazon has been welcomed by Londoners, especially the mayor.
Boris Johnson commented: “For this wildly successful and dynamic company to choose our city to site such an important facility is a splendid feather in our cap.
“We know we have the talent, the space and infrastructure to make the most of the digital economy – this will be my prime message during Games-time, as I seek to woo even more companies for the capital, delivering jobs and growth for Londoners.”
