America, Amazon Wants You!

The US coronavirus lockdown has meant millions of Americans have lost their jobs, with more than 16 million submitting unemployment claims.

Amazon, the online retailing giant has encouraged those who have become unemployed to take up their 75,000 job vacancies. This comes as the company has seen a significant increase in orders.

In line with the demand for essential goods, including infant baby milk and health products, Amazon has said it would ease its curbs on non-essential goods which were being sold online to their 95 Million US customer base.

The 75,000 additional job vacancies come after last month the company took on 100,000 extra US staff in order to help with demand for medical equipment and food for existing customers.

However, new customers to the online platform are having to wait and are being placed on a waiting list.

Non-essential items from third-party sellers which makes up most of the platform sales would now be available.

Amazon said in a statement to the FT, “products will be limited by quantity to enable us to continue prioritizing products and protecting employees, while also ensuring most selling partners can ship goods into our facilities.”

On its daily blog, Amazon said in response to the global health crisis, that the new roles were designated to warehouse jobs.

With the ongoing European and America lockdowns, Amazon may look to open more job offers in the UK. New facilities may have to be opened in order to process the new demands.

Amazon has faced criticism during the coronavirus crisis from its employees over staff protection. There have been numbers of protests from warehouse staff over adequate protection whilst the Financial Times reported that more than 50 Amazon locations have coronavirus.

Amazon insists that it has made changes in these challenging times and now introduced testing, deep cleaning and social distancing as well as handing out protective gear and constant temperature tests in all its worldwide operations.
