Do you have a sweet tooth? Do you like visiting museums? If so then we know a great commercial property that you can visit next year. The city of York is currently constructing a museum to celebrate the city’s history and future in confectionary products.
The commercial property is set to open in early 2012 and is costing roughly £2 million to complete. Continuum, the developers have named the project, ‘The Sweet History of York’. Continuum was also responsible in establishing the successful Jorvik Viking Centre in the city.
The commercial property is hoping to share local people’s experiences and memories of manufacturing and trading in confectionary both past and present. Juliana Delaney, Chief Executive of Continuum expressed, “The people of York have played such a valuable role in the city’s sweet story, and we would love them to come forward with their memories. Most people who have grown up in and around York will know someone who worked at one of the city’s confectionery dynasties. We know that there are lots of stories to be told and would like to hear from anyone who would like to share their memories.”
Visitors to the commercial property will not only have the prospect to learn about the city’s confectionary, but they will also have the opportunity to make their own chocolate.
The commercial property in the City of York is being designed by MET Studio. The location for the museum is York House, in King’s Square which previously was resided by Alison Homes Décor shop. Continuum have recruited Oakgate Group to develop the 1960’s commercial property. They will combine all three floors and include a shop and restaurant in the museum. John Grantham, Chief Executive stated, “King’s Square is one of York’s unsung jewels. It is the meeting point of many of the city’s busiest thoroughfares and is a very significant part of the city centre. We want to enhance the vitality of King’s Square and make it a recognisable shopping destination.”
Continuum have been working closely with top chocolate brands which include: Kraft, Nestlé and Tangerine Confectionery. They also want to include contemporary chocolate companies as well as the big brands, as Juliana Delaney said, “[We] will work with modern chocolatiers to show the modern chocolate industry in York.”
