Councillors in Leeds have this week overwhelmingly thrown their support behind a project to create a six storey office block in the city centre.
The development, situated on a plot currently being used as a car park, is a joint venture between developers Bruntwood and Kier Property, who submitted the initial application back in April. Upon completion, the office development will offer a total of 93,240 sq ft of space and will play a significant role in the regeneration of Sovereign Square.
Furthermore, the development will help the local authority to meet environmental targets, as the joint developers are hoping it will achieve a BREEAM Excellent rating. The structure will be comprised of a mixture of glass and brickwork, allowing for a huge amount of natural light to enter the office space and save on lighting costs.
Kier Property director, Tom Gilman, says; “We are delighted to be working with Bruntwood on this significant development and with the Council who have demonstrated a pro-active approach to the project, which will deliver a scheme in the regeneration of this core part of the city.”
The regeneration of Sovereign Square has been a long time in the making, as the site has largely fallen into obscurity since the demolition of the Queen’s Hall in 1989. However, a number of development projects have seen businesses return to the area of late, with professional services firm KPMG due to move into its new 61,000 sq ft regional headquarters at No. 1 Sovereign Square towards the end of 2015.
Bruntwood director Craig Burrow believes the planning approval for the new office block will play a huge role in meeting market demand within Leeds.
He says; “Despite the tough economic conditions, Bruntwood and Kier have been working closely with Leeds City Council over the past couple of years to bring this development forward.
“We have definitely seen demand within the market place increase and feel now is the right time to be delivering this high quality scheme at 3 Sovereign Square.
“We are really excited to be working on a project that will be so transformational to this area of the city centre.”
