Recently we reported that on average people who work through their lunch hour everyday clock-up an extra 128 hours of overtime per year, which equates to 16 full days unpaid. With this in mind, it does raises the question; is the lunch break a thing of the past?
Back in the day people were entitled to an hour and they took an hour. But now, although people are entitled to an hour lunch break, many simply take 20 minutes to quickly scoff down a sandwich. Some don’t bother taking any break at all.
But due to people scoffing food down quickly, many people resort to having five snack meals per day, rather than have a larger ‘proper’ meal in the evening. Breakfast usually takes ten minutes or less to eat and many people eat on the go, even though it is meant to be the most important meal of the day.
But after a long day in the office, eating only snack food, some people find themselves hungry in the middle of the night. This brings out the midnight fridge raider in you. You aren’t going to cook at 2am, so instead you make do with a finger dunk in the Dairylea cheese and a bite out of a sausage roll.
Have a look around your office from 12pm onwards. Some will leave to eat their lunch, but come back shortly after. Whereas some will eat at their desk whilst still typing on their keyboard. But then you get the odd one who takes the full hour. Are they bad for taking what they are allowed to or it is now frowned upon to actually take a lunch break?
