Arena Central Developments Limited (ACDL) has confirmed the appointment of Galliford Try as main contractor for the first phase of Birmingham’s new Arena Central scheme.
Galliford Try and ACDL, a partnership between Miller Developments and Pro Vinci, have signed a contract worth £66 million for a large scale construction project at the 9.2 acre Arena Central site. The housebuilding and construction group will be responsible for the delivery of the 2 Arena Central building which, upon completion, will be used as the UK headquarters of HSBC’s new retail bank.
In total, 2 Arena Central will provide 210,000 sq ft of office space over 28 storeys, which eventually will be used by HSBC to house up to 2,500 workers in its retail banking division. As part of the agreement, Galliford Try will also conduct extensive improvement works to the surrounding public realm, including the creation of an “urban meadow” and public square at Bank Court.
Executive chairman of Galliford Try, Greg Fitzgerald, is pleased the firm has been selected and believes the scheme will be good for the city.
He says; “We are delighted to have been chosen to construct such a prestigious development in this key regeneration area for the city of Birmingham.
“Galliford Try has a strong presence in the West Midlands and we look forward to delivering for our partners at ACDL and producing a landmark scheme for them.”
The Arena Central regeneration is one of the most highly anticipated ongoing projects in Birmingham, allowing an area of the city which once boasted landmarks such as the former Carlton Television studios a new lease of life. So far, progress at the mixed use development is coming along strongly. Site clearance began in 2013 with the demolition of a multi-storey car park, allowing work to begin on the construction of a new hotel which is expected to open to the public in 2016.
