Today Americans are marking the 4th of July with barbeques, picnics, carnivals and parades. The national holiday commemorates the Declaration of Independence in 1776 and events across the country will draw huge crowds.
Meanwhile, here on the other side of the Atlantic, UK towns are celebrating the vital role that independent retailers play in bringing diversity to the high street and boosting the economy.
Independence Day is the most American of US federal holidays and it provides the opportunity to decorate homes and commercial properties with balloons and streamers in the red, white and blue of the national flag.
New Yorkers have a wide choice of activities to enjoy as they escape their offices for the day. They can go shopping in SoHo, enjoy a picnic in Central Park or maybe head to Brooklyn for Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest.
The competition is a hugely popular event. Last year it was witnessed by 40,000 spectators and watched live by nearly two million viewers on ESPN television.
This evening they can gather to watch Macy’s firework display light up the sky over the Hudson River. The display, organised by the flagship commercial property, involves 40,000 pyrotechnic shells and is America’s biggest firework display.
Here in the UK, instead of marking independence, towns up and down the country are celebrating the second annual Independents’ Day. Independent retailers play an important role on the high street and customers are asked to acknowledge this by buying at least one item from an independent today.
Jane Rexworthy, of the Academy for retail, explains; “People are passionate about their local shops and appreciate the contribution they make to a town’s personality. Independents’ Day is an exciting way to showcase the variety of independent retailers and traders in the UK and get the British public spending in them.”
Here at MOVEHUT we wish all our American visitors a happy Independence Day and urge all our UK readers to mark Independents’ Day by making a purchase from a local independent commercial property today.
