Online fashion retailer ASOS has announced plans to extend its Barnsley distribution hub to double storage capacity and continue its growth.
The plans follow the news that the global company, in one of Europe’s largest logistics deals, has awarded a three-year contract, worth £100m, for the management of its worldwide distribution centre to Norbert Dentressangle.
More than 1,200 people are employed at the warehouse, which handles deliveries for a product range that stretches above 60,000 lines, both own-label and branded.
ASOS’s Barnsley distribution hub currently has more than 1.1m sq ft of floor space and is equivalent to the size of six football pitches. To support its continued growth and global expansion, ASOS has submitted a proposal to extend the warehouse by 25 per cent, effectively doubling storage capacity at the site.
ASOS moved its main distribution hub to Barnsley in 2010 and opened its Grimethorpe warehouse in 2011.
ASOS distributes to customers in 241 countries and territories from the global distribution hub in Barnsley. ASOS achieved sales of £194m, a 45 per cent growth on 2012, in the three months to the end of May 2013.
Mark Holland, ASOS’ supply chain director said: “The partnership with Norber Dentressangle will continue to drive the ASOS global service proposition, creating an efficient customer-focused experience, and supporting our mission to become the world’s number one online destination for young fashion.”
