The latest addition to Edgbaston Medical Quarter has moved a step closer after it was announced that construction of Birmingham Dental Hospital will begin next month. The £34 million development will house a range of public services alongside research facilities and a school of dentistry.
The project is the result of a partnership between Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Trust, the University of Birmingham and Solihull LIFT. It will be delivered by property investment and development company, Calthorpe Estates which has been involved in the expansion of the dedicated medical hub for six years.
Welcoming the news Tracy Taylor, chief executive of the Healthcare Trust, said the development is a symbol of the high quality services they aim to provide.
“We are committed to working with our partners to provide excellent care and treatment for all the communities we serve in accessible locations, fit-for-purpose for modern healthcare provision.
“It is very pleasing that construction work can now begin and we are a significant step closer to welcoming staff, students and members of the public to share in the benefits of this exciting development,” she said.
The project is seen as a key element in the growing medical hub which was officially branded earlier this year. Edgbaston is already home to over 60 per cent of Birmingham’s healthcare economy and is set to become an internationally recognised centre of excellence, attracting industry leading names to the West Midlands.
Among the healthcare properties in Edgbaston are 80 hospitals and specialist care centres, 44 GP surgeries, and 21 training and educational facilities. Together they house nearly 200 medical and research organisations.
The dental hospital, which will occupy the site of the former BBC Pebble Mill studio, is expected to be completed in 2015.
