Birmingham Mailbox to get a Cinema in 2014

Birmingham office, retail and leisure development The Mailbox has recently signed a contract with Everyman Cinemas. Under the new agreement, the cinema operator will open a three-screen, 12,000 square foot cinema late next year.

The Mailbox’s owners, Brockton Capital and Milligan, had apparently wanted to broaden the centre’s offering for some time. It announced its refurbishment plans earlier this year, which will see the retail component renovated and extended.

Everyman operates a total of 10 cinemas throughout the UK but the Mailbox will be the first one located in the Midlands. It will feature the brand’s own signature style, which includes comfortable sofa seating, lounge areas and “rustle-free” food. Everyman at the Mailbox will also have a fully-licensed bar.

The new cinema will also have the latest in digital projection technology, with Sony Digital 4K projectors and 3D capabilities. It will be able to screen a varied programme of films and special events. Visitors will also be able to view live theatre and opera.

The redevelopment of the property includes a new Harvey Nichols store, measuring 45,000 square feet. Pre-let agreements have been signed with a number of leading fashion brands. Jaeger, L.K. Bennett, Gieves & Hawkes, and Daniel Footwear will be moving in, and Castle Fine Art is planning to open a new gallery as well.

Alex Wright, the associate partner at Brockton Capital, said recently that the decision to open at The Mailbox was an endorsement of the Midlands’ as a “luxury lifestyle destination” as well as the appeal of Birmingham to exciting, standout brands.

Andrew Myers, the CEO of Everyman Media Group, said that The Mailbox and its customer base presented what he felt was the right opportunity to launch this concept in the Midlands.
