One of Europe’s busiest international airports is currently undergoing a massive security operation due to a bomb threat. Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam has, according to airport spokesman Martijn Beelen, been forced to evacuate two departure halls in the interest of public and staff safety. The affected buildings are said to be international terminals 1 and 2.
The threat was received earlier this morning, with Dutch police responding immediately and launching an investigation into the severity of the situation. At this time, little is known about the ongoing police operation within the airport, although flight radar screens show planes landing as normal, indicating that planes have not as yet been redirected to other airports in the region for landing.
International airport security has been vastly tightened following the September 11 attacks in New York and Washington DC, which caused the deaths of almost 3,000 people.
