Television, broadband and fixed-line telephone provider BSkyB has pledged to create 550 new jobs as the UK demand for its services continues to grow.
In the nine months to March 31st, pre-tax profits reached £994 million – a 9 per cent increase from a year earlier, when a total of £899 million was recorded. Furthermore, revenue jumped 6 per cent to £5.4 billion when compared to the same period last year.
The success of BSkyB has been attributed to the total paid-for subscription base, which has exceeded 30 million customers for the first time in the company’s history. This was largely due to the popularity of broadband and telephone services, with 152,000 internet customers and 186,000 people signing up for Sky Talk in the past three months alone.
Chief executive Jeremy Darroch expressed his pride that the uncertain economy has failed to dampen business for BSkyB.
In a statement, he said; “Despite the tough consumer environment, we added 715,000 more subscription products in three months, taking the total past 30 million for the first time.
“On the back of this growth, we are creating 550 new jobs to meet demand for our products and serve our growing customer base.
“These results highlight the way that our successful transition to more broadly-based growth has created a bigger, more profitable business – and having more ways to grow serves us particularly well at a time when household budgets look likely to remain stretched.”
The addition to BSkyB’s employee base means that the company has already created 1,250 jobs in 2013, with the potential for further expansions should the full year results released in three months continue the good work laid down in the third quarter.
According to the company, the 550 new positions will be mainly based at its new commercial property in Newcastle, which acts as a customer contact centre, while several will act to support growth in its product base.
With the future looking bright for this telecoms giant, there is little doubt that further growth can be expected this quarter. However, it remains to be seen whether the much-anticipated 4G mobile service will have an impact on BSkyB’s broadband services when it truly comes into effect.
