The City of Cape Town has announced that it is considering offering the Desmond & Leah Tutu Legacy Foundation a long-term lease on The Granary. The building, which was built in 1812, is one of the oldest and most important historical structures in the East City Precinct.
The proposal to lease the building will be put to council for a decision shortly. The building is described as currently “run down”and if the Foundation is given permission to go ahead, it will receive permission to lease the 3,605 sq mbuilding for a nominal amount for a 38-year term.
Archbishop Tutu stated that the Granary would be used as space for his foundation’s head office. It would also be used as affordable office space for non-governmental organisations in and around the city.
The Granary was first used as a customs house and later as a post office. In 1820, an observatory was established on the site.
It was also used as a women’s prison and a magistrate’s court and offices, but its time as the granary gave it the name that has stuck to the present day.
Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu is now retired from public office and is spending his time working for his foundation.
The foundation focuses on developing and managing partnerships and “legacy-promoting programmes.”
It also contributes to promoting Cape Town as a world centre for promoting local and world peace, human dignity, and morality.
