As people prepared for the Christmas period, Meadowhall in Sheffield enjoyed increased footfall as shoppers flocked to the shopping centre.
In the lead up to Christmas, footfall was up by eight per cent in November 2012, when compared to the same period the previous year. In total 1.5 million people visited Meadowhall during the two week window around Christmas.
Boxing Day saw the largest amount of shoppers in one day as people hunted in their thousands for bargains. 150,000 people visited the shopping centre on that day, with some queuing from as early as 2.30am to ensure they didn’t miss out on a sale.
But what items have shoppers been on the hunt for during the festivities and sales? According to Darren Pearce, General Manager of Meadowhall, items such as electronics, beauty products, handbags, designer clothes and shoes have been at the top of the list.
He said: “Luxury goods including leather handbags, designer clothes and accessories, perfume sets, shoes and electronics were among some of the must-have items for eager bargain hunters.
“From December 28 to 31 we saw an increase in the sales of beauty items including lipsticks, false eyelashes and high heel cushioned pads, as shoppers prepared for New Year’s Eve celebrations.”
Fitness items also did well as people started their new year’s resolutions in style.
Darren added: “Predictably, health supplements, gym wear and sporting equipment have been selling well thanks to zealous shoppers eager to make a prompt start to their January health kick.”
