Christmas Temp’s Could be More Permanent at Sainsbury’s

It’s that time of year again when thousands of jobs are advertised in various high street shops up and down the country.

One of the first to make the announcement for Christmas temporary staff is Sainsbury’s, who have at least 15,000 jobs available in their 1,000 commercial properties.

The jobs available include; check-out staff, customer service, stock replenishment and delivering online orders to customers. Gwyn Burr, Customer Service and Colleague Director spoke of the jobs available over Christmas.

He said: “Job creation is one of the most important contributions we make to the communities in which we serve, so this year we’re happy to announce that we have created 15,000 seasonal jobs.

“Christmas is the busiest time of year in our stores, so the work is fast-paced, varied and rewarding.”

But of those temporary jobs available over Christmas, 14 per cent will become permanent roles, thanks to Sainsbury’s 20by20 commitment plan, which aims to create 50,000 jobs over the next eight years.

“The number of permanent jobs created following the Christmas season is testament to the fact that Sainsbury’s is a great place to work, with many opportunities on offer and the potential to learn a whole set of new skills,” Gwyn added.

Job creation is key to kick starting the economy, so the fact that Sainsbury’s is offering the chance for 2,000 jobs to be made permanent is welcome news. But just because you are working in the commercial property already will not guarantee you a permanent position, you will have to apply for the job just like everybody else.

The Christmas temporary jobs may not sound like the career you dreamed about at school, but don’t be disheartened as Gwyn says, there are plenty of opportunities to climb the career ladder.

“People can develop their career with us and progress relatively rapidly, to run a team, a department or a store.

“In fact, many of the colleagues who started with us at Christmas are now in charge of large teams and budgets, helping to drive sales and deliver great service.”
