After 31 years of pulling pints, the current landlord decided it was time to hang up his taps. The Greystone Pub, formally the Highcliffe Hotel in Sheffield was a run down local boozer in need of major work.
The pub is based in the popular area of Ecclessall, which has many thriving commercial properties including shops, restaurants and pubs. Thornbridge Brewery saw this as an opportunity to build upon the character of the pub and so they invested a six figure redevelopment into the property with the idea of restoring the pub, but also developing the outside and rear of the commercial property to attract old regulars, but also appeal to new customers. Simon Webster, Chief Operating Officer at Thonbrifhe Brewery stated, “It is a pub we have known for many year that is packed full of character with a great history and boasts the only full size snooker table left in a pub in the City.”
Thornbridge Brewery has been brewing since 2004 and produces more than 200 million pints a year, which is a challenge for any beer fan to drink dry.
The work on the pub finished in November 2010, and since then the place has been thriving. They have a full range of Thornbridge beers on offer as well quality bottled beers. The pub seems to have something for everyone with regular events, which include music and comedy nights, as well as quiz nights, with all proceeds going to a local charity, St Luke’s Hospice. One happy customer expressed, “We love it…a proper ‘local’.”
‘Morning Advertiser’, a leading magazine for the licensed trade recognised the hard work on the pub and has awarded them Best Turnaround Pub in Yorkshire and the North East. The pub will now face other regional pubs in the final on 8th September in London, where an overall turnaround pub winner will be announced.
