Crucible Renovations Boost Snooker Sales

Snooker may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but this year its fan base has grown with record breaking sales in Sheffield.

The World Snooker Championship takes places at The Crucible in Sheffield and has done ever since 1977. The property underwent a major renovation in 2008 which took two years to complete and cost £15.3 million. But now the renovations are paying off as record numbers of people flocked to the city to witness Ronnie O’Sullivan do what he does best and win the title for the fifth time.

The 17 day competition sold over 38,000 tickets which raised over £1 million. The venue has a capacity to hold just under 1000 people per match. Ivan Hirchowitz, spokesperson for World Snooker, which organises the tournament spoke of the increase in interest in the sport.

He said: “It has been another outstanding World Championship and we are delighted with the support from the people of Sheffield.

“The fans really got behind the event from first day until last and the atmosphere inside the arena was magical.

“We have received tremendous support from Sheffield Council and we look forward to the future of the World Championship at the Crucible.”

The tournament will be held at The Crucible for at least another two years. After that it could go anywhere. Do you think the World Snooker Championship should remain in Sheffield like it has done for over 30 years or do you think it’s time for another city to take the cue?

The snooker should defo stay in Sheffield. It’s been here longer than I have and it would be such a shame if we lost it. I’m sure there would be a few petitions and demos if another city tried to take it.

It’s part of our culture now! 🙂
