Death Of The Office, But Not The Virtual Office

Do you work in the same office space you did ten years ago? Have the once solid walls made way for glass partitions? Is your office a much brighter and vibrant place than a decade ago?

I am sure many will prefer the office they work in today, to the one they worked in a number of years ago.

New research has declared that by the year 2021, the offices of today may be extinct. The new study which was commissioned by Virgin Business Media, reveals that 58 per cent of UK workers believe the offices of today will not exist in ten years time.

The study was created in order to celebrate the ten year anniversary of hit sitcom, ‘The Office’ and surveyed 1000 office professionals across  the UK. The study asked  how they feel their office lives have changed over the course of the last decade and what do they see for the future of their working lives.

As a result of rapid improvement in technology and the improved ability to access data and important information remotely, many feel they could be spending more time working from home or in locations which are specific to a certain project. The ability to carry your office around with you has been enhanced dramatically.

Mark Heraghty, managing director of Virgin Business Media, said: ‘Just like the dinosaurs, the office may soon be resigned to the history books, with six in ten workers predicting that they won’t exist by 2021… As employers search for more agile and effective ways of running their businesses, we’re increasingly finding that firms are swapping expensive office spaces in favor of a virtual workplace, where all activities can be conducted remotely.’

Should this forecast become a reality, one section of the commercial property market which would see rapid improvements would be the virtual office market. With this in mind, wee could see an increasing number of commercial property owners dipping their toes into the virtual office market, over the course of the next decade.
