Edgbaston Medical Quarter will be officially launched today at a summit bringing together healthcare providers, academics and the private sector. The launch, in effect the branding of a district that already exists, provides the quarter with an identity which it is hoped will attract some of the world’s leading healthcare professionals to the Birmingham suburb.
Edgbaston has been at the forefront of excellence in healthcare provision for a number of years experiencing significant growth in the range of services available across the public and private sector. Currently there are over 300 medical and life science facilities in the district, including 130 hospitals and specialist care centres. There are also 58 research centres and a number of GP clinics and training facilities.
The initiative is being supported by property development and investment company Calthorpe Estates which recently announced that a 62 en-suite room Bupa care home will be the latest addition to the quarter. Planning permission has also been approved for a new dental hospital and a school of dentistry.
Sales and marketing director Jayne Herritty says; “Calthorpe Estates is wholly supportive of investment and development that will attract new medical practices and strengthen expertise in the area.”
Tony Davis, the chief executive of Medilink, says the area offers a strong combination of academia, medical professionals and industry working collaboratively.
“Techniques, devices and services created within the Edgbaston Medical Quarter over the last decade have changed medical procedures across the world, dramatically improving patient care and outcomes.
“With the creation of the Edgbaston Medical Quarter we will be promoting this expertise to a global audience, encouraging inward investment and commercial growth,” he added.
Laura Rivkin, of the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills, will officially launch the quarter at the UK’s inaugural Life Science Summit taking place at Edgbaston Cricket Ground.
