Edinburgh Airport has announced plans for a £150m expansion. The investment includes £25m for the redevelopment of the international airport’s terminal building.
The 6,000 sq m facility will be built around a new state-of-the-art security area that will allow passengers to move through that part of the airport faster.
The airport estimates that the expansion will create more than 100 new construction jobs.
There will also be a brand new airline business centre with offices and new retail areas, including the gateway’s first walk-through store.
Gordon Dewar, Edinburgh Airport chief executive, said: “Our expansion is a significant mark of our intent to transform our customers’ experience of Edinburgh Airport through high-quality facilities, outstanding customer service and one of the best direct international route networks in Europe.
“This investment is the first of a number of developments that will build Edinburgh Airport’s profile around the world, helping us to compete more energetically with other UK airports and those in mainland Europe.”
The extension will see the terminal move into the airport’s current coach park, making the terminal access closer to the new tram stop.
Relocating the security area will create more valuable space inside the terminal, which will be used for extra retail and passenger spaces.
The money will be ploughed into the expansion over the next five years with the redevelopment of the terminal being the first major project.
Work will begin in October 2013, with the new security area expected to open late next year, followed by the new shopping area in 2015.
