Facebook has announced that they are moving from Carnaby Street, Soho to a larger office in Covent Garden in January 2012. The listed building in Covent Garden will accommodate the social networking firm, which comprises of 36,000 square feet of office space across three floors.
The new commercial property will hold the companies 70 staff who have currently been working in the small office at Carnaby Street for the last four years. The office will be refurbished by architecture and interiors company Gensler who will follow the office designs that are currently being used in all of their offices. The new office will mean the company can recruit more advertising and sales jobs, which are UK based, whilst the majority of the company will remain in California. Joanna Sheilds, Vice President and European Managing Director stated, “As Facebook’s growth continues, we are delighted to be expanding our operations in the UK with a move to a larger office in central London next year.”
Facebook’s move comes after other high profile American companies, Twitter and Google announced that they were searching for commercial property in the capital. Whilst Google currently has two UK offices, Twitter is yet to set the sails with a UK move.
Facebook was originally started by Mark Zuckerberg in 2004 as a social network website for students at the University of Harvard, but since then it has expanded globally and is open to everyone. Facebook has around 750 million active users, with 50% of those logging on everyday. Facebook is currently the largest social networking site in the world, with people spending over 700 billion minutes per month on the website. Mark Zuckerberg stated, “People have really gotten comfortable not only sharing more information and different kinds, but more openly and with more people – and that social norm is just something that has evolved over time.”
