Grosvenor has let the Pantechnicon building in Belgravia to Pantechnicon (London) Limited, whose owners plan to transform the property into an impressive “contemporary fashion emporium.”
Dating back to 1830, the 12,000 sq ft Grade II listed building was designed in the Greek Revival style with Doric columns fronting onto Motcomb Street. The redevelopment process, masterminded by British based architects Aukett Swanke, will retain many of the six floor property’s original features but will also create space for a new café, restaurant and bar along with a south facing roof terrace.
Pantechnicon (London) has been established by Barry Hirst and Stefan Turnbull, who presently operate three Cubitt House hospitality venues in Belgravia. Company director Mr Turnbull is very excited about the prospect of redeveloping the historic property and introducing a new retail and leisure venue to the area.
He says; “Barry and I are delighted to have been chosen for this exciting project and we very much look forward to working with Grosvenor.
“The relationship between retail and hospitality continues to evolve in order to meet ever more sophisticated customer expectations and we look forward to the challenge of creating a world class food and shopping experience in Belgravia.
“This is a good news story for Motcomb Street, to which a revived Pantechnicon will bring vibrancy and enhanced footfall.”
In preparation for the grand opening of the new-look Pantechnicon, Grosvenor Britain & Ireland has revealed plans to improve public areas in the immediate proximity on Motcomb Street, and will soon begin work on the designs in consultation with Westminster City Council and local residents.
Pantechnicon (London) Limited, meanwhile, intends to begin renovation works on the property itself later this year, with the building expected to open to the public in early 2017.
Location Director for North Belgravia at Grosvenor Britain & Ireland, Simon Elmer, believes the firm made the right choice in letting the property to Pantechnicon (London) Limited.
He says; “This is terrific news for both Motcomb Street and Belgravia – Stefan and Barry have over ten years’ experience of operating successful venues in Belgravia and have a real feel for, and understanding of, the area’s reputation as a special and unique place to visit.
“We think they will do an excellent job turning the Pantechnicon into a fashion and culinary hub, attracting people from around London and beyond.
“We have a long-term interest in making Motcomb Street a great place to live, work and visit and the Pantechnicon will be another major step towards this.”
