The BBC recorded the last news broadcast from its West London Television Centre (TVC) last night. The news bulletin which was broadcast at 10pm yesterday was presented by Mishal Husain. Over the years presenters of the programme have included: Angela Rippon, Anna Ford, Moira Stuart, Richard Baker and Peter Sissons.
Television Centre has been broadcasting news bulletins for almost 45 years, since opening in the 60’s. From today the BBC News will be recorded from Broadcasting House, which is based in central London.
Speaking of the move to their new home, Phil Coomes, Picture Editor for the BBC said: “There are many memories for me in this building, from nights in the BBC Club – including one where I ended up helping Frankie Howerd back to the head of light entertainment’s office – through to photo shoots, and all the colleagues I have worked with. But let us not get sentimental.
“Our new home in central London is a modern glass office space, and lovely it is too. But it’s new, and does not yet have the history of TVC.”
The TVC was sold last year for a reported £200 million. Plans to redevelop the site include flats, a cinema, hotels and office space. The television studios will be refurbished during the development and will be leased to production companies, so expect to see them on your screens in the foreseeable future.
Are you sad to see the Television Centre go? Do you have any fond memories of programmes broadcast from the TVC over the last 45 years?
