Harrods, the famous Knightsbridge department store, is set to undergo a multi-million pound revamp which won’t have any detrimental effect on its historic architecture.
The main part of the revamp will involve the installation of a new escalator in the famous store. But this isn’t just a normal escalator that you see in the likes of supermarkets and shopping centres! This escalator has been designed by architects to fit within the historic surroundings of the building and will cover all seven floors.
As well as installing the escalator, the owners of the department store, Qatar Holdings will also restore the lighting globes and copper cladding which surrounds the listed staircase in the store.
The store is also getting a new chandelier, made by American glass sculptor, Dale Chihuly which will hang in the entrance hall on the ground floor. Harrods Managing Director, Michael Ward spoke of how the revamp will enhance customers experience within the store.
He said: “When Harrods’ owners, Qatar Holding, took over the business in May 2010, they publicly declared their desire to ‘upgrade the monument’ that is Harrods for all its customers.
“This latest investment reaffirms their commitment to maintaining Harrods’ status as Britain’s greatest retail destination, and our customers can look forward to an optimised shopping experience.”
Harrods was originally founded in 1849 and has grown significantly over the years from a small shop selling just tea to a world famous department store. Today the store attracts around 15 million people per year and sells anything from fashion and food to cutlery and bedding.
