A historic Liverpool property with links to the Titanic is set to be transformed into a hotel themed around the doomed ocean liner. The building in question is Albion House on the Strand, which was once the head office of Titanic operator the White Star Line.
It was from this address that news of the ship’s sinking was announced over a hundred years ago, following which the staff were barricaded inside for two days.
The property has now been bought by Liverpool based signature living which plans to renovate the Grade II listed building which they believe is perfectly positioned to prosper as a boutique hotel. It will also feature a restaurant, bar and events space.
They promise that the renovation will be sensitive to both the building and to the victims of the disaster and that it will serve as an ‘incredible tribute.’ The Titanic theme will be enhanced by stripping out false ceilings and partition walls to reveal the hidden steel columns and rivets they say were handled by the same engineers who worked on the liner itself.
A report for the planning committee, which will meet next week, says that the hotel will complement the office use of the area and contribute to its leisure offer. It continues to say that it will be a ‘very positive step forward’ both to the preservation of the building and to the enhancement of the waterfront area.
Planning officers have already indicated that they have recommended the development for approval.
