HMV have launched a new mobile phone app to encourage shoppers to buy both in-store and online.
The app, which is available to download on both Apple and Android phones allows users to scan CD covers, adverts or posters whilst in store or out and about to give them a taster of the track. Users then have the option to buy the track via the app or they can simply take it to the till if they are in store.
Users of the app can also pre-order tracks and listen to their music purchases on other devices such as Windows PC’s, Blackberry and Windows smartphones.
HMV was saved from administration by Hilco earlier this year. One of their main strategies was to revamp their online service and with this app and a new online digital music store things are moving in the right direction.
Chairman of HMV and Chief Executive of Hilco, Paul McGowan, spoke of the new app and the buying potential for customers.
He said: “HMV’s position at the heart of entertainment retail demands that we enable customers to buy their music from HMV in the way that best suits them and to engage more closely with the music, video and gaming worlds.”
Would you use an app whilst shopping in-store to try before you buy? Or do think the idea will be short-lived as people will probably have already heard the music they want to buy on the radio or the likes of Spotify?
