Now that the presents have been opened and turkey curry is rapidly losing its appeal some who are enjoying extended festive breaks may be wishing they were back at the office. After all, with only New Year’s Eve left to look forward to, these few days in between can seem a little flat.
So why not get out and about in London? There is plenty to see and do in the capital to fill the rest of the holidays and, combined with a little retail therapy, it’s guaranteed to relieve any post-Christmas blues that may be creeping in. Here are a few of our favourites!
We’ll start with something that’s certain to be a hit with the kids and the young at heart. Hyde Park Winter Wonderland has proved to be an extremely popular attraction this festive season. The event features ice skating, Zippo’s Circus, the Magical Ice Kingdom, a giant observation wheel and over 100 festive fair rides. So if you want to blow away the cobwebs Winter Wonderland continues until 16th January.
Another frost-themed winter treat is Hampton Court Palace Ice Rink. This year the event is celebrating its 10th anniversary and it’s still going strong. So if skating is your thing what better setting could you hope for than this magnificent palace under the winter sun or the evening stars? This event runs until 13th January.
If you’d prefer a little culture there’s plenty to satisfy you in the capital at the moment. How about popping along to the Royal Opera House to see the National Ballet perform the ever popular The Nutcracker? With wonderful choreography and the enchanting score by Tchaikovsky it really is a must for all ballet fans and those searching for something beguiling. The Nutcracker continues until 16th January.
At the Apollo Theatre on Shaftesbury Avenue one of Shakespeare’s best loved comedies Twelfth Night continues until 9th February. Packed with memorable characters the play, starring Mark Rylance, also features some of the best lines and songs ever written by the bard.
Finally, at Tate Britain, art lovers still have the opportunity to see an exhibition charting the history of nineteenth century England’s most radical art movement. Pre-Raphaelites: Victorian Avant-Garde features 150 works by the likes of William Holman Hunt and John Everett Millais. You can catch this exhibition until 13th January.
So there are a few of our recommendations to fill the remainder of the holidays but, of course, London has so much more to offer. And if you’re wondering where to celebrate New Year’s Eve London does that too!
