GG Hospitality — the property company owned by footballers-turned-developers Gary Neville and Ryan Giggs — has confirmed it is delaying the opening of its hotel venture by four months.
Hotel Football, being built in the shadow of the former players’ Manchester United stadium at Old Trafford, was set to open its doors this month but has now been delayed until 2 March.
A GG Hospitality spokesman explained: “We have worked closely with the contractor every step of the way and we have decided to delay the opening of the hotel until next March so we can further develop unique features, beyond our original plans.”
Among the last minute upgrades are an extension to the rooftop five-a-side football pitch and a 50 per cent increase in the hotel’s event space. There will also be enhancements to the conference and banqueting facilities.
When complete Hotel Football will also be the home of The Old Trafford Supporters Club. “We want to ensure the supporters and hotel guests have an unforgettable experience when they visit us and this additional preparation time will ensure this — it’ll be worth the wait,” added the spokesman.
Other United legends involved in the 10-storey hotel and leisure project on Sir Matt Busby Way, are Gary Neville’s brother, Phil, and fellow Class of 92 members Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt. The four-star venture will generate at least 200 jobs.
As well as providing “the ultimate match day experience” for fans, the 133-room hotel will incorporate a Cafe Football, an outlet of the restaurant chain launched by Giggs and Neville and which has already opened a London branch.
The Manchester eatery, however, will have a menu designed by double Michelin star chef, Michael Wignall, with twists put on terrace favourites such as sausage rolls.
Last month Gary Neville outlined the motivation behind Hotel Football: “Ryan and I have spent so much of our lives playing at Old Trafford and appreciate everyone who supported us there over the years.
“To make sure that the hotel appeals to everyone, not just football fans, we are working with some of the most talented people in the industry to create something unique and inviting — with a focus on excellent customer service,” he said.
