Kildare House, which lies near Winscombe, finds itself back on the market following a decision by Weston Hospicecare not to proceed with a planned transition.
Formerly known as Mooseheart, the iconic country house will now have a guide price of £1.75m and will be marketed jointly by Colliers International and Hobbs & Webb of Weston-super-Mare.
Colliers International’s Jay Ridsdale confirmed that the substantial Victorian country house offered considerable potential for conversion and redevelopment into a healthcare facility, boutique hotel or apartments.
He added: “Kildare House is a handsome property comprising a large country house – formerly used as a members’ hotel – along with the former coach house and lodge.”
With impressive views of the Mendip Hills, Kildare House is located in an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in North Somerset village of Winscombe. Conveniently situated off the A371 connecting to Weston-super-Mare and the A38.
The main building was purchased in 1933 by the Moose International organisation and retains many of its original features. It was renamed Mooseheart and afterwards used as a retreat for members.
Weston Hospicecare acquired the property from Moose International last year and had planned to use the main building as a hospice but decided against the transformation.
The main building is set in 20 acres of grounds with woodland and, at present, is configured as a hotel, which includes formal gardens and a large kitchen garden. There is an agricultural paddock to the front of the property, which is the subject of an on-going agricultural occupancy.
Within the two-storey building there are 14 bedrooms with en-suites, a commercial kitchen, three receptions, a function room and large conservatory. With views towards Banwell Castle, the coach house stands in 1.77 acres and is currently used as office. The Gatehouse Lodge has two bedrooms and is in 0.13 acres.
Jay Ridsdale said: “This unique estate boasts enviable views and some fine ornamental lawns and woodlands. The original house and estate buildings offer some intriguing possibilities for re-development.”
