When we think of July, we usually think of hot weather, a nice beach and a barbeque. But for one shop owner when they think of July, they think of Christmas shopping.
Yes that’s right, a shop on the high street has opened up in Truro, Cornwall selling everything Christmas related. You can buy your tree decorations, cards, wrapping paper and even advent calendars in July. But is the owner crazy or clever to get ahead of the Christmas panic in November?
The shop will be leased by Truro Cathedral and Reverend Roger Bush spoke of the decision to open in July.
He said: “We’ve had a successful Christmas shop within the cathedral for many years and we’ve found, oddly enough, that during the summer months when we get more visitors, people want to buy good quality Christmas products.
“I know it looks a bit odd, culturally, to have Christmas things in the middle of perhaps the hottest time we’ve had for many years, but we do believe there is a demand for this.”
But do people really want to see a shop selling Christmas items in July? It’s bad enough that the adverts start as soon as summer is over, but at least the shops hold off until November to stock tree lights and mince pies. But Reverend Bush defended the churches decision to begin trading early.
He said: “I don’t think there’s anything wrong in being commercial. If there’s a genuine demand for things and we can meet that demand, it’s absolutely fine.”
Do you have the urge to go Christmas shopping in summer? Or do you prefer the rush of Christmas Eve?
