We are not referring to the slang term ‘buzzing’ often referred to as being intoxicated, but instead innocent buzzing bees. Confused? No need. Commercial properties in London are being offered free beehives in a bid to boost morale.
Tass Mavrogordato, Chief Executive of InMidtown, the company behind the beehive scheme said, “The pilot scheme aimed to tap into the business benefits of hosting apiaries.” The company hopes that hosting beehives will improve team building as everyone will play a role in looking after the bees. Professional beekeepers will train and assist staff to care for the hives and gather the honey. The results will be monitored by Dr Susan Parham, Head of Urbanism at the University of Hertfordshire.
Five businesses in London have already signed up to the scheme and will add 40,000 bees to their workforce. The beehives will be set up on the roofs of the commercial property. One company already happy with how the scheme is going is law firm Olswang. Sam Hudson, Corporate Responsibility Executive at the company said, “It just seemed like a great project and staff absolutely love it.”
It will not only be businesses that will wreak the benefits as Olswang are planning to sell the honey that they collect, “We are going to sell it off to our staff and raise money for our charity partner Coram. Hopefully give some to our clients as well,” as Ms Hudson said.
Some bosses may be worried that joining the scheme will affect work levels in the office. But the bees only need to be checked once a week and all suits and equipment are provided. However, it may not suit everyone especially if you have a fear of bees, also known as apiphobia. If a honey bee does manage to sting you, it will release pheromones that will prompt other bees to attack as well.
