Reports suggest vehicle manufacturer Jaguar Land Rover is searching for a plot of land where it can establish a new manufacturing facility. The company’s expansion in the UK is evidenced by its development of a new £0.5 billion engine factory near Wolverhampton. The company has announced that it is twice the size of the original factory.
The company’s need for more space at its facility in Castle Bromwich has meant that it has taken over a former cinema site while talks are continuing to acquire the Dunlop Motorsport tyre factory located nearby. Reports are also suggesting that the company is looking for another site close to its existing manufacturing facilities located in the West Midlands or the North West.
The website SHD Logistics has reported that the company is searching for a 30-40 acre plot with up to 450,000 square feet of mixed distribution and manufacturing space. The site indicated that it believed surveyor Montagu Evans, which has offices in London and Manchester, had been advising on the project.
The company’s growth plans are well documented and the timing of this move is quite significant. Next month, it is expected that JLR will make an announcement at the Frankfurt Motor Show that it will go ahead with a new Jaguar crossover vehicle. An announcement about a new entry-level Jaguar that will compete with the BMW 3-series may also be in the works.
If this is accurate, the company will need a significant increase in its production capacity to produce the volume necessary to reach the market. Its existing facility at Castle Bromwich is already operating at full capacity with four models (the XJ, XF, XK, and the new F-Type) moving off its production line.
