Jubilee Bank Holiday Could Leave Retail Commercial Properties Jubilant

Posted on 4 June, 2012 by Kirsten Kennedy

Everyone loves a good bank holiday. The sun is (occasionally) out, you get to have a lie-in in the morning and, best of all, you have a whole day to relax, catch up on neglected tasks or visit local commercial properties as the mood takes you. All of these factors contribute to an excellent weekend for businesses, in particular retail commercial properties.

As we all know, it’s not been the best year for retailers with commercial properties on the high street. In fact, it’s getting to the stage where independent and large chain businesses are liquidising on a daily basis, due to the tough economic conditions they have to work in. Yet the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee could prove to be a lifeline for struggling commercial properties, as Scott Storey, Managing Director of CTS Retail, explains.

Mr Storey says; “Whenever we have a bank holiday, it changes the playing field when it comes to retailing because people feel differently about shopping on these days.

“It’s not a chore or a rushed visit over the weekend out of necessity, but a choice to go out and really enjoy their time shopping.

“For this reason, it is far easier to encourage customers to buy things they wouldn’t normally, simply because they feel happier and more relaxed during their visit.”

Yet much of the success of your retail commercial property over the bank holiday weekend will depend on your staff. Customers are more likely to respond to an enthusiastic store member and splash the cash in your commercial property if they are treated to an experience in a positive environment.

With that in mind, here are MOVEHUT’s top tips for retailing achievements in your commercial property;

  • Ensure each member of your staff is efficient, friendly and able to give an excellent performance in customer service.
  • Play happy, upbeat music throughout your retail commercial property, thus putting customers in a positive mood.
  • If you are a member of staff in a clothing commercial property retailer, make suggestions to customers – for example “That dress looks lovely on you, but accessoriSing with this belt would really finish the look.”
  • Similarly, if your retail commercial property specialises in interiors, suggest pieces such as cushions or rugs that would compliment items the customer is interested in purchasing.
  • Using a member of staff, or even two or three, to greet customers as they enter the store, as seen in successful chains such as Asda and the Hard Rock Cafe, will make customers feel special and give their shopping experience in your retail commercial property a more personal touch.
  • Most of all, ensure your staff are happy and enthusiastic – nothing dampens the mood in a retail commercial property like a sales person with a face like a wet bank holiday weekend!

Follow these tips, and your retail commercial property could prove to be a success story of the bank holiday weekend.

Mr Storey concludes; “Meeting and greeting customers is an easy way to boost engagement immediately, so make sure you dedicate some of your team to front of house activities.

“Consider ways to make the day enjoyable for your staff, such as incentives for the number of greets or store card signups and so on.

“Customers want to find their shopping experience enjoyable and there is nothing worse than having to face a grumpy employee who is clearly only looking forward to the end of their shift!”
