We’ve all seen the Waitrose adverts where Heston Blumenthal or Delia Smith have 30 seconds to show us how to create an elegant desert, followed by Waitrose kindly giving a promotion for the ingredients involved. Well it seems that one particular Waitrose advert may have blown all the others out of the water after sales have rocketed.
The advert for the Diamond Jubilee Strawberry Crumble Crunch was only broadcast for the first time this week, but already sales in their commercial properties of they key ingredients have doubled, quadrupled and even increased by as much as 1000 per cent.
The desert which happens to be simultaneous with the British strawberry season is made up of strawberries, elderflower cordial, rose water, marbled cream, almonds and crumble.
“I have designed this indulgent pudding especially for The Queen’s Jubilee weekend, which coincides with the beginning of the British strawberry season. It makes me proud to be British,” Heston spoke of the desert.
So far sales in Waitrose commercial properties of elderflower cordial have increased by a whopping 1000 per cent, whilst rose water sales have increased by 52 times. Sales of cream have quadrupled and meringue nests which are needed to make the crumble are selling 20 times more than normal.
In addition to the sales that Waitrose has already seen, during this week, they expect to sell seven times as many strawberries, six times as many almonds and enough Golden Caster Sugar to match the weight of 1,666 Welsh corgi’s – the Queen’s favourite dog breed.
Speaking of the Jubilee desert, Graham Cassie, Brand Manager at Waitrose, said: “The demand for ingredients has been astonishing with customers desperate to recreate this dessert for their friends and family.
“It’s lovely to think that, at exactly the same time as those attending the Buckingham Palace garden party are tucking into their picnics, there will be countless others around Britain enjoying this new dessert.”
