A landmark £30 million leisure development in Perth city centre is expected to create jobs and attract over 300,000 visitors every year.
The Mill Quarter development will bring together restaurants and bars, speciality shops, a gym and a new cinema, along with a new multi-storey car park.
Although a planning application for the ground breaking scheme is not expected to be submitted until later this year, the early plans have already gained the support of Perth and Kinross Council, who have appointed Expresso Property as the preferred developer for the project.
Director Nicholas Robinson claims that, should planning approval be granted, this year, the new development should open by early 2018 at the latest.
He says; “We are delighted to have been selected to create this new leisure quarter making it an ideal location to live, relax and entertain in the heart of the City.
“We are particularly focused on developments in Scotland, and we have been impressed by the support given by local government and their agencies in making things happen.
“That forward thinking has been crucial in establishing the real business case for this development here in the heart of Perth and we are now excited to get the project underway.”
One of the major benefits of the scheme is expected to be the impact upon local employment levels within the construction sector, as more than 350 construction and supply jobs will be created during the development process. However, other industries operating in Perth are expected to profit too, as it is believed the completed scheme will attract a further 300,000 visitors to the city centre each year.
The Mill Quarter scheme is the first development to be secured using the Scottish Cities Alliance, a partnership between Scotland’s seven cities and the Scottish Government which aims to attract a higher level of investment to major points of interest in the country.
Deputy First Minister John Swinney believes the successful securing of this project is testament to the strength of the partnership.
He said; “If Scotland’s cities thrive so too does the rest of the country, and I am pleased to announce this exciting new £30 million venture for Perth.
“The Scottish Cities Alliance provides a single point of contact for potential investors to access all seven Scottish cities – this success clearly signals the benefits of our cities and the Scottish Government working together in partnership.
“I am delighted that this is the first deal to be done, and I hope it will be the first of many.”
