London universities have recorded the most violence within a three mile radius according to a new study using police figures. The most reported types of crime were burglary, robbery and violent crime. The figures were collected over an 11 month period from June 2011 to May 2012 and have been released in The Complete University Guide.
The top ten commercial properties in London with the most crimes reordered were; London Metropolitan, King’s College London, London South Bank, City, School of Economics, Birkbeck, SOAS, University College London, University of the Arts and Westminster. Outside of London, the top ten universities with the highest crime rates were; Manchester Metropolitan, Leeds, Manchester, Salford, Birmingham City, Aston, Bristol, Birmingham, Teesside and Glyndŵr.
It is estimated that one in three students are victims of crime and one in five experience a robbery during the first six weeks of an academic year.”While these crimes are the three most commonly perpetrated against students, the figures relate to all victims, not just students,” said Bernard Kingston, the founder of The Complete University Guide.
Bernard added: “Our new methodology allows potential students to assess the risks for individual institutions which much greater precision, at least for England and Wales. In the absence of data for crimes affecting university students specifically, either on or off campuses, they offer the best available guide.
“But it would be reassuring for university applicants and their parents if such information was readily available from the universities. It is clearly a matter of considerable concern when considering where to study as an undergraduate.”
However unlike our friends in the USA across the pond, UK universities are not obliged to publish detailed crime statistics about their students. But given that thousands of students attend university at any one time and on average one in 500 students in England and Wales experience some sort of crime it is quite worrying.
Do you think the UK Government should by law ask university commercial properties to display their crime statistics that students experience both on campus and in student houses? Would the information make you think twice about sending your son or daughter to a university if their crime statistics were higher than others?
