Majority of Business Owners Will Not Take a Christmas Holiday

During the Christmas period many firms shut down completely for around two weeks maximum, while some only shut down for the festive bank holidays. But as a business owner, even shutting down on Christmas Day could cost you your livelihood. For that reason many business owners choose to work throughout Christmas and every day for that matter to ensure that their business survives.

Sage UK conducted a survey on 1,000 SME business owners in the UK and found that over half, 630 to be exact, do not close down their businesses at all during Christmas. Even if their business is closed for the festive period, two out of five business owners expect to still be working, whether that is catching up on paperwork or ordering stock.

Of the festive days, New Year seemed the most popular to work on. 100 people said they would be working on New Year’s Day, whilst 50 people said Christmas Day and 70 said Boxing Day. But it seems business owners don’t mind working at this time of year as 84 per cent said that they were more productive in the peace and quiet. Plus they will more than likely have the choice to work from home, rather than their commercial property.

But business owners can face certain challenges by working over the festive period as Chris Stonehouse, Head of Online at Sage UK described.

He said: “Working over Christmas can prove quite challenging if you hit a problem but have no-one to turn to because the support team are tucking into turkey.”
