Many regional towns and cities throughout the UK have begun to examine their commercial property options as a means of boosting the local economy amidst the investment boom benefiting the country from overseas firms. However, few have been as active as Grimsby in recent months, as it has been revealed that the town centre is now to benefit from a further office and retail project on top of the large overhaul of the surrounding area announced several weeks ago.
The multi-million pound development is yet to gain planning approval from North East Lincolnshire Council’s cabinet, but if successful will see around 24,000 square feet of office and complementary ground floor retail space created in the Cartergate area of the town.
Planning permission is expected to be granted, as the local authority has already approved a report recommending that the Council commits to the scheme due to the numerous benefits the development could bring to the area.
One of the key benefits of the scheme would be the continuing residency of Wilkin Grange Chapman LLP, Grimsby’s largest law firm. The practice is looking to expand and has already earmarked the development as its new headquarters, as there is not at this point a facility which would provide both good accessibility and adequate commercial space in existence.
Chief executive of Wilkin Chapman Grange, Julia Whittaker, says; “Wilkin Chapman Grange is a growing business which needs a modern building suitable for flexible working.
“The firm is deeply rooted in Grimsby, serving local clients – businesses and individuals alike.
“We are therefore delighted to be working with North East Lincolnshire Council to take part in this exciting project which will regenerate Grimsby town centre.”
Assuming the existing plans go ahead, there will be some land left over in the Cartergate area when construction has been completed. In order to maximise profitability, North East Lincolnshire Council has suggested that this could be used for a hotel or suitable alternative development – potentially a leisure complex to complement the town’s growing retail base.
Leader of North East Lincolnshire Council, Councillor Chris Shaw, believes this new proposal will encourage future investment which will benefit Grimsby.
He says; “Grimsby town centre will be transformed by the combination of this ambitious proposal, Freshney Place’s cinema plans and the redevelopment of Riverhead.
“It’s a truly exciting time for the borough and this has been brought about through our close working relationship with town centre businesses to develop projects that act as catalysts to attract more investment and create more jobs.
“Private sector confidence in the borough is growing all the time and as a result North East Lincolnshire is becoming a better place to live, work and invest.”
