Peter Horton has taken over as chairman of property company Hortons’ Estate. He is the fifth generation Horton and the sixth member of the family to become chairman of the Birmingham-based business.
A qualified chartered surveyor, he joined the 143-year-old company in 1995 and was elected to the board six years later. Horton’s appointment follows the retirement of Richard Samuda, who is stepping down as chairman and non-executive director after 11 years.
“I am extremely honoured to have been passed the chairman’s baton by Richard, who has been a loyal servant of the company,” commented Horton. “He has made an invaluable contribution to both the company and the Horton family and leaves the business in good shape.”
Hortons’ Estate has also appointed Simon Gulliford and Peter Lee — who succeeds Richard Kirby, who is stepping down from the Hortons’ board after 19 years — as non-executive board directors.
“This is an exciting time for Hortons’ and I am very much looking forward to working with my colleagues on the board, each of whom have a wealth of experience in their respective professions to bring to the table, and the management team to develop the business further,” said Peter Horton, who is also a divisional director of Investec Wealth, running the firm’s Cheltenham office and specialising in multi-asset investment management for individuals and corporations.
Founded in the 1870s by Isaac Horton, the independent property company has since grown into a multi-million pound business, with a portfolio of leisure, retail, offices and industrial properties.
It owns and manages assets worth around £200m — including the Grade II listed Grand Hotel on Birmingham’s Colmore Row — which, in turn, generate more than £15m a year in rents from the firm’s 600 tenants.
