New laws are being introduced under the Consumer Bill of Rights to ensure shoppers are better protected against issues that they are faced with when shopping in commercial properties.
Currently the Consumer Bill of Rights hasn’t had an update for decades. The laws are often longwinded and hard to understand, often making consumers reluctant to complain about faulty goods or services that they have received in retail commercial properties. The new laws will make the process of complaining much smoother as currently the laws can be quite complex.
Speaking of the change in law, Norman Lamb, Consumer Affairs Minister said: “The UK’s consumer law is complex and difficult for consumers and businesses to understand.
“We want consumers to feel confident about their rights so they can challenge businesses when they buy poor quality goods, services or digital content such as music or games.”
The new laws will allow people to know what they can claim for, how to make a claim and what they should expect to get in return.
“This should help people know what they’re entitled to and what they can do when things go wrong, which is good for consumers, better for businesses and benefits the economy,” Richard Lloyd from Which? said.
Also the laws will be brought up to date with digital products such as music and eBooks – which are currently not covered in the Consumer Bill of Rights.
“To catch up with the 21st century the legislation will also need to make clear the rights of consumers when they’re buying services or shopping in the digital world,” Richard added.
After all would you know who to complain to if an eBook you had purchased failed to open correctly after you had downloaded it?
