Planning permission was granted this week for a new Marks & Spencer store on Wolstanton Retail Park. The store, which is due to open in 2014, will create much-needed jobs in the Stoke-on-Trent and Newcastle-under-Lyme area.
The new store will measure 140,000 sq ft making a significant impact on the retail park, which is already home to big retailers such as Asda, Matalan and Homebase. On offer will be a large range of products, covering clothing, gifts, home ware and food.
During the building phase, an estimated 100 construction workers will be employed on the site which is to be located at the northern end of the park. Further employment will be created once the store is open to the public, as up to 250 workers will be required to staff the new branch of the retail giant.
Marks & Spencer is also keen to highlight that the outcome of the planning permission decision in no way affects their plans to become the tenants of one of the largest commercial properties available in Hanley’s proposed £350 million City Sentral Shopping Centre.
Clem Constantine, property director at M&S, says; “This is an exciting proposal and represents a significant investment in the region.
“We estimate it will create around 250 new jobs as well as an additional 100 jobs in the construction phase.”
The employment opportunities created in the area will be a welcome relief for the communities surrounding Wolstanton Retail Park, as unemployment levels in the area have increased greatly since the beginning of the recession. Retail has been hit especially hard, with a recent study showing that around 1 in 3 retail properties in Stoke-on-Trent are currently unoccupied.
