Timewise, a flexible working consultancy and training company, has launched a new scheme that aims to promote career progression for part time workers, called the Retail Pioneer Programme.
The scheme will run for 12 months and it hopes to identify what is currently preventing part time staff from entering into management roles, and furthermore, what can be done to overcome the difficulty.
Some of the largest retailers in the UK have already signed up for the scheme including Tesco, John Lewis, Cook, Dixons Carphone and B&Q, with a total workforce of over 450,000.
Survey conducted by Timewise found the need for flexibility is currently a bigger factor than lack of skills that is stopping them from progressing.
Moreover, the scheme is supported by the British Retail Consortium. Helen Dickinson, BRC Chief Executive said: “It is important that these part-time workers are able to progress within organisations when they choose to and we’re delighted to be part of the Retail Pioneer Programme, to support retailers with the task of delivering these opportunities in flexible ways.”
