Nine Elms on the South Bank is hosting a series of events throughout June, showcasing the £15 billion transformation of the former industrial area into an internationally significant commercial and residential district.
The programme of events is part of the London Festival of Architecture (LFA) which takes place between 1-30 June, and which this year celebrates the theme ‘work in progress’.
Nine Elms is currently one of the largest ‘works in progress’ in Europe, with over 30 schemes either under construction or in the planning process. These include offices, hotels, cultural institutions, tube stations, new homes and public parks.
The centrepiece of the huge regeneration project is the redevelopment of the Battersea Power Station site, which will provide over 470,000 sq ft of office space on the six upper floors of the restored building alone. In total, the scheme will deliver over 1 million sq ft of office space, alongside leisure and retail developments and residential accommodation.
Many of the world’s leading architects and designers are involved in reshaping Nine Elms, including Frank Gehry, Foster + Partners, Sir Terry Farrell, Allies and Morrison, Rogers Stirk Harbour, Kieran Timberlake and Rafael Viñoly.
The programme will include guided walking tours, panel discussions, a horticultural spa experience and even an architecturally themed pub quiz on Battersea Bridge.
Helen Fisher, Programme Director at Nine Elms on the South Bank, said: “I am delighted to present our programme for London Festival of Architecture, which I am sure will replicate the success of our participation in last year’s festival.
“The programme will appeal to locals and visitors from across London and beyond, of all ages and backgrounds with an interest in one of Europe’s largest and most exciting regeneration projects. I also look forward to seeing Nine Elms new neighbours get better acquainted with London’s latest emerging district.”
