Discount grocery store Aldi has committed to opening a new 16,500 sq ft site in South Yorkshire if a planning application by Gregory Projects gets the green light.
The developer is planning to develop a 3.87 acre site adjoining Parkgate Town Centre in Rotherham for leisure and retail use. Gregory says the proposed letting to Aldi fulfills a local need for an easily accessible discount grocery store as this was “lost” to the community when the original Netto store was changed to an ASDA.
Gregory Projects is working with land owner and local business Ron Hull Jnr to secure approval to construct the discount food store together with 30,000 sq ft of additional leisure and retail facilities along with 194 car parking spaces. The site, at the corner of Great Eastern Way and Broad Street is just one mile from Rotherham town centre and was previously owned by Pendragon and operated as a car showroom. The site was remediated 12 months ago and has been empty since.
Richard Tovey, the Director of Gregory Projects, said: “Our plans propose to bring a redundant ‘key’ site back into use after such a long while. It has been earmarked for mixed-use and our plans are in response to market demand.
“The occupiers that have expressed an interest will benefit Parkgate by enhancing the comparison shopping on offer. The scheme has good pedestrian links to the town centre and to an existing bus stop at Broad Street, which makes the site accessible to local residents and commuters alike.”
Leeds-based Gregory Projects recently finished Broad Street Plaza, the £40m mixed use development in Halifax town centre which was more than 90 per cent let before completion. Its portfolio also includes the £40m Foss Island retail park in York.
The Leeds office of Colliers International is dealing with the planning process and Yorkshire-based civil and structural engineers JPG has also been appointed to the project. GVA in Leeds is advising Gregory Projects on the lettings for the site while the Sheffield office of Knight Frank is acting on behalf of Ron Hull.
