Sheffield Council has received proposals from developers to build a £20 million incinerator on a Sheffield industrial estate.
The commercial property in Sheffield would burn excess timber, such as demolition wood, to produce energy and heat. The renewable energy that is produced at the plant would equate to around 33,000 megawatt hours per year.
The plans for the commercial property have been drawn up by Mediena Ltd, under its trading name of UYE (UK) Ltd.
Speaking of the plans, Stephen Brooks, Director of Mediena Ltd, stated: “Sheffield has had a great reputation for delivering innovative renewable and green energy projects for the last 25 years.
“We see this project as being a way of extending that great reputation for the next 25 years.”
The council have not yet come to a decision as to whether the plans for the commercial property will be accepted, but Mediena have already spent the last few years in research and preparation and have raised the money needed for the project.
“We have been quietly working on this project for the last two-and-a-half years and a considerable amount of research has gone into refining our plans for this and other similar developments across the country,” Brooks said.
If the plans are accepted, work on the commercial property will begin later this year, with completion due in 2013. Also, some of the energy produced at the plant would be sold to the council’s heating schemes.

On the contrary, plans were recently opposed for a similar incinerator in Weybridge, Surrey. One person against the incinerator said: “The people who are going to be affected, apart from those in the immediate vicinity who will be devastated are the public who are downwards of the prevailing wind.
“Wood is a bulky load so there will be enormous vehicles going in and out.”
